eanwhile, if you are moving to Chelmsford to take up a job post, statistics show the city has a higher than average percentage of jobs per population and lower than average unemployment rate. This is for a number of reasons, but it is partly because it has a well-educated workforce, lots of well-known organisations are based here and it has easy road and rail links to London.
The Economy
Chelmsford is the only city in Essex and has a population of around 170,000, nearly 60% of whom are of working age. As well as the county and city councils, several national and international companies have a presence here. With a number of shopping centres and business parks, new companies are being established all the time which attracts even more people to move to the area for employment reasons.
Business in Chelmsford through the Ages
As expected, Chelmsford originally had an agricultural economy, but from the 19th century onwards it became a hub of industry and centre of logistics. Various factories opened up here, including the former Hoffman Manufacturing Company, which was once the city’s biggest employer. A number of these factories closed in the 1980’s and 1990’s and in some cases, the buildings, or parts of the buildings, were turned into apartments or the remaining site turned into a housing estate.
However, new businesses have sprung up in the town since this time, including the financial services company M&G and worldwide manufacturer e2v Technologies (previously the English Electric Valve Company). A number of well-known chain stores can be found in the shopping centres and retail parks, and several large companies are based at Chelmsford Business Park.
Largest Organisations in Chelmsford
Among the biggest employers are the city and county councils and Mid Essex NHS Trust, which employs around 4,000 staff across five sites including doctors, nurses, porters and cleaning staff, with the main site being Broomfield Hospital. For those who are taking up a post in education, Chelmsford College, which is spread across three campuses, and Anglia Ruskin University (Chelmsford Campus) are also major organisations. Other large employers in the area include the Anderson Group Developments, one of the largest construction companies in the South East and eV2 Technologies, which employs 1,650 people and is based at Waterhouse Lane.
Chelmsford Business Park
Chelmsford Business Park is one of the main industrial parks and is a 40 acre site close to the A12 and about two miles from the town centre railway station. The business park is nearly complete (2016) and has a number of office and storage units, as well as research and manufacturing units, all based within a landscaped environment. Several large national and international organisations are based here, including property developer Barrett Eastern Counties, worldwide consultants for the automotive industry, Clifford Thames Group, and ebm-Papst UK, which is a global fan and motor manufacturer.
Transport in Chelmsford
Chelmsford is right in the centre of Essex, close to the A12, and half an hour’s drive away from the M11 motorway. There are regular train services to and from London and journey times take just over half an hour. As the city is in such close proximity to London, just as many people travel into Chelmsford to work as those who commute from here to London. For travel further afield on business, Stansted Airport is about a 30-minute drive away by car and it takes two hours to get to Thames Gateway international port.
