The Riverside Ice and Leisure Centre

If any of your children fancy themselves as budding Rory McIlroys, then this attraction should be right up their street. It includes a nine-hole crazy golf course, plus a full 18-hole pitch and putt course. It is suitable for children aged 4 to 18.

Boydells Dairy Farm, Braintree

For those who want to venture a little further afield, but want something a little less energetic, then you could spend an afternoon at this farm, which is about 13 miles north of Chelmsford. You and your children can try your hands at milking cows and sheep, as well as feeding them, while younger ones can enjoy a ride on a goat or donkey cart.

Great Notley Country Park

This is close to Braintree, and the site covers 100 acres and a huge variety of activities. Children can enjoy sand pits, tyre swings and rope climbing, plus more conventional activities such as birdwatching, cycling, fishing and horse riding. It is also a great place to have a family picnic.

Virgin Balloon Flights

If you and your family have a head for heights, what better way can there be of getting to know Chelmsford and the surrounding area than by going on a hot air balloon trip and getting a bird’s-eye view? The Essex launch site is at Newland Hall, Roxwell, just over four miles to the west of the city. Passengers do need to be at least seven years old and at least 4ft 6ins tall. Vouchers can be purchased for weekdays, weekday mornings or seven days a week.
