Here is our guide to the charming and picturesque coastal village of Tollesbury.
About Tollesbury
The village lies on the mouth of the River Blackwater and was first mentioned in the 1086 Domesday Book. It is locally known as the village of plough and sail, which shows that it owes its growth to both farming and marine trade. These two elements to its character are reflected in the village sign. The local oyster industry started in the 17th century and is still flourishing today.
The Kelvedon and Tollesbury Light Railway, which operated from 1904 to 1951, also helped the village and local area to flourish. It was a local branch line off the main London rail line which ran into the village, and there was a short-lived extension to Tollesbury Pier, but lack of use meant it closed in 1921. The pier itself was destroyed as a precaution during the Second World War, and the whole line was closed to passengers a few years later.
Things to Do
Tollesbury Wick Marshes, a 240-hectare nature reserve to the east of the village, is rich in many forms of wildlife. Depending on the season, visitors may be able to see birds such as marsh and hen harriers, golden plovers, lapwings and short-eared owls take to the skies, while the ground is home to badgers, field voles and pygmy shrews.
Tollesbury Marina has a range of facilities, including a small camp site, plus a chandlery which should meet all your boating requirements. It is also home to Tollesbury Cruising Club, which operates a bistro and bar, tennis courts and a swimming pool, plus a programme of social events and races.
Transport
Tollesbury’s rural location means there is plenty of charming Essex countryside to view on your doorstep. Neighbouring villages worth visiting include Tolleshunt d’Arcy, Tolleshunt Knights and Goldhanger. There are several other nature reserves within easy reach on the Colne and Blackwater estuaries.
The village is also close to the towns of Maldon and Colchester, and also lies within easy reach of the A12, which links Essex with London and Suffolk. If you do need to go to the capital, Greater Anglia run regular rail services which pass through both Chelmsford and Colchester.
Education
Tollesbury School in East Street caters for children aged from 4-11. It has seven classes. It has received the International School Award from the British Council due to its awareness of the importance of international education, and its links with other schools across the world.
Village Amenities
Tollesbury has a range of shops and businesses. The Kings Head pub is located in the heart of the village by the central ‘Square’, and there are also convenience and general stores. The nearby Oyster Business Centre is a small industrial estate which is home to a variety of companies.
The village also has its own surgery in the High Street, and even its own swimming pool. Woodup Pool, also known locally as Woodrolfe Pool, is a free open-air lido which has been open for more than a century.
