Boston in Massachusetts, and its English counterpart in Lincolnshire, don’t have much in common, apart from their name. Here, we look at some of the differences between the American city and the English town – and one important similarity if you are considering moving to Boston (in the UK or the USA).
The History
As you probably would expect, the Lincolnshire town of Boston is much older than its American counterpart – it was mentioned in the Domesday Book in the 11th century. Its name is derived from a shortform of ‘St Botolph’s town’ – St Botolph was an English abbot and saint.
The US city dates back to 1630 – it was founded by Puritan settlers from the UK Boston when they crossed the Atlantic Ocean. The USA’s first president George Washington spent a lot of time in the city – the Siege of Boston was one of the first battles fought in the American Revolution. This is commemorated by a statue (pictured below) in the city’s Public Garden. And, of course, another of the Revolution’s defining events took place here – the Boston Tea Party.
The Bostons Today
Today, the UK Boston has a population of just over 45,000 people. It’s a market town and inland port – the major employers of the area are in food production and transportation.
Boston in Massachusetts is a much larger city, and it has a population of more than 675,000 people. It’s notable for its educational sector (although Harvard and MIT are in Cambridge, Massachusetts, there is a campus in the city of Boston) and its financial sector. As you would expect in a city surrounded by American history and academic excellence, tourism is also a vital cog in the city’s economy.
Famous For…
Boston, MA is also famous for being the setting for the TV sitcom Cheers (set in a bar in the city). It also had the first public subway, in Tremont Street, built in 1897, and the first public beach, Revere Beach, which was opened a year earlier. Donna Summer, the pop star, was born here, as were actors Mark Wahlberg and Chris Evans.
Boston in England is famous for its historic buildings – notably St Botolph’s Church, pictured above, known locally as the ‘Stump’. Famous people who were born in the Lincolnshire town include Robert Webb (of Peep Show fame), EastEnders actress Amanda Drew and Jonathan Van-Tam, former deputy chief medical officer in the UK.
Both places have their own marathon, held on the same day in April but, while the US version goes through the city and has thousands of entrants, the UK version is rather smaller but the race does go through parts of the picturesque Lincolnshire countryside.
The Sports Teams
The American city boasts the more famous sports teams of the two. They include the Red Sox baseball team, the Celtics basketball team, the New England Patriots (American Football), the Boston Bruins (Ice Hockey) and the New England Revolution (soccer); all are names famous in America and across the world, and almost all of them have enjoyed championship success over the past couple of decades.
The Lincolnshire Boston has two football teams, Town and United, but both are now playing at non-league level. Boston United spent a few seasons in the football league, from 2002 to 2007, before being relegated and going into administration before rising again. The UK town also had a speedway team (the Barracudas) but they stopped racing in 2008; however the town’s rugby union team, Boston Rugby Club, is still going strong.
