When you're preparing for your move, why not declutter the house?
Many of us have things we don’t really want or need, sometimes built up over many years, and which have been just gathering dust. When you are moving house, it is the perfect time and opportunity to rid yourself of unwanted things that sit around the house unused - maybe in the loft, the garage, the shed or indeed anywhere in or around the home.
By getting rid of everything you don't want or don't need you could even find yourself saving money on the cost of the removal itself. At the very least, by decluttering you will only take with you into your new home what you actually want and need, which can only help you to settle into your new home in an organised, practical and tidy way from day one.
Greens Removals provide home content removals from our bases in Chelmsford and Stowmarket. Here we provide some top tips on how to approach the task.
Plan Ahead – and Start with a Small Room
The thought of decluttering can, of course, be quite daunting and not something we look forward to. It therefore helps to create a plan. Write a plan that includes the room order you will tackle the declutter.
Greens Removals recommend you start with a small room which means you will see very quick results, and this will only help to encourage you and spur you on for the rest of the task at hand.
When you declutter, it is important to attempt to be practical, and try not to let emotion or sentiment cloud your judgement about disposing of what caused the clutter to build up in the first place.
For example, when sifting through the books that you may own, how many will you really ever get round to reading or re-reading? If you have read a book and it's unlikely that you'll ever read it again why not remove it from your collection and send it to a charity shop so that somebody else can get the benefit and enjoy it? How many cups or mugs do you actually use or need to use that sit in the kitchen cupboard?
Be practical and think about how many you really need to keep, and the rest can be added to the declutter list. The same applies to other crockery and kitchenware. How many teaspoons can we ever use at the same time? If you don't use it, lose it!
The Six-Month Rule
Boxes in lofts or garages can often be in there for years with their contents sealed in constant darkness and unused. A general rule of thumb is that if you’ve not opened a box for six months you probably never will again and don’t need it. Although the Christmas decorations only come out of their box once a year so don’t dispose of them under that rule unless you don’t actually use them over the course of a year.
The above principles apply to every room you tackle. If you'll never wear that shirt or that pair of jeans again, then let go of them. If you have two garden forks in the garden shed, one of which you haven't used in 10 years, declutter and get rid of it. The list goes on!
Put Your Unwanted Possessions in Separate Piles
When your selecting items during this process Greens Removals recommend you consider placing them neatly into separate piles. You could for example have a pile for recycling, a pile destined for the charity shop, a pile to sell or simply give away, and a pile for waste.
Take Your Time – and Involve the Whole Family
Above all, don’t rush it and take your time with your declutter. If you can, involve the family to make it more fun. Kids love their toys but ask them to sort out those they may have grown out of or don’t play with any longer. Explain to them that there is a child out there who would love to play with the toys they no longer need.
