Chelmsford is a great place to live, with ample employers in the district. However, if you feel that you would like to live outside the city, then you may want to consider one of the picturesque parishes in Essex. With so many quaint hamlets and a variety of different-sized communities, there is ample opportunity to find the right one for you. Here are a few places to ponder when moving to the rural neighbourhoods of Essex.
Great Notley and Black Notley
Both Great Notley and Black Notley were developed during the Millennium, so all the housing stock is new and modern, although excavations in Great Notley have found the remains of Iron Age and Roman settlements. Black Notley was first attested in 998 as a Saxon settlement, with a mention in the Doomsday Book. Both rural locations were designed to be modern, self-sufficient garden villages and are all linked by a spine road.
You will find a business park, where there are a variety of small businesses such as a vet, a pub, estate agents and a tanning salon. There is a country park, with an assault course, café and water fountains, and the two communities have two primary schools and a high school between them.
Silver End
Built in 1926, to house workers in a nearby factory, Silver End boasts a community hall which is the largest in the UK. It has a first-rate dance floor, cinema, library, snooker room and health clinic. The village has some excellent examples of Modernist and Art Deco architecture, and has two churches, a playing field and pub. There is an abundance of shops and other amenities, and it is a ten-minute drive to Witham, which has a train station on the London Liverpool Street Line, providing easy access to the City.
Felsted
Felsted, sometimes spelt Felstead, has some fantastic period houses, with thatched rooftops. There are modern houses too, and many have large gardens and more than adequate parking. This is a lovely rural community with about 2,000 residents and has two pubs, a bed and breakfast, and a ladies clothing shop. Named in the Doomsday Book this settlement has been inhabited since Saxon times and Oliver Cromwell sent his two sons to the school here!
Great Baddow
One of the largest villages in the country, Great Baddow has a population of around 12,000 inhabitants, and the centre of this large community has over thirty listed buildings and is a conservation area. The parish has a distinct history, and was the starting point for the Peasant’s Revolt in the 14th century. It has all the amenities of a small town, including four pubs, a fire station and a wealth of shops in the Vineyard’s Shopping Centre.
Broomfield
Broomfield is another important Saxon site where gold, glassware, household items and weapons have all been found, and which are now in the British Museum. The village has a large A & E hospital, so there is employment for those in the medical profession. You will also find two pubs, an abundance of shops, football and cricket clubs and local primary and secondary schools. This is a much-sought after location where you will discover a variety of period and modern homes to choose from.
