If you have just moved home to another town or city, joining a local sports club is often the ideal way to get to know people. Playing or just watching sports can offer you the opportunity to meet up with people with similar interests and can help you feel more at home in your new community, particularly if the organisations have a thriving social set-up.
Chelmsford and the surrounding area has a number of sports teams and clubs catering for people of all ages and abilities. Greens Removals is highly experienced in organising removals to Chelmsford and has a detailed knowledge of the area. Here is our guide to a few of the leading sports clubs in and around the city.
Chelmsford Gymnastics Club
This friendly club is for adults as well as children. It was first formed around 30 years ago and now more than 1,000 gymnasts a week come to its headquarters on the city’s Widford Industrial Estate. It boasts a number of county champions and competes in regional and national competitions too.
Chelmsford Hockey Club
This was established in 1898 and now has more than 400 members. The club runs a total of 17 adult and 10 junior teams in local and regional as well as national leagues. Every spring the club, which is based in Beehive Lane, runs training sessions for adult beginners and those who are returning the game after a period away. It also has a thriving social scene and runs an annual tour to a club in the Netherlands.
Chelmsford Canoe Club
Previously called Chelmsford Boating Club, this club has more than 400 members. It races flat-water canoes and kayaks on the Chelmer and Can rivers and the clubhouse is in Empire Walk, close to the Chelmer. Members compete in a variety of events across East Anglia as well as the club’s own Sprint Series. Starter sessions are available for beginners. The club’s social programme includes nights devoted to quizzes, games and Robbie Burns.
Chelmsford Rugby Club
The club runs three men’s teams, a veterans’ XV, a ladies’ team and has flourishing junior and mini sections. Formed in 1920, the club plays home games at Coronation Park in Timsons Lane. It runs a variety of social events, including a beer festival to mark the beginning of the new season.
Anyone for Tennis?
The Chelmsford area has a number of tennis clubs, offering plenty of opportunities for coaching, social play and competitive fixtures in local leagues. The city’s Grove Club has six all-weather floodlit courts in Moulsham Drive, and a membership nearing the 300 mark. Great Baddow Lawn Tennis Club also has six courts, all of artificial grass. And Writtle Tennis Club, to the south-west of Chelmsford, has four all-weather hard courts and runs its own Junior Tennis Academy.
Enjoying a Game of Golf
Chelmsford Golf Club, on Widford Road, was founded in 1893 and is one of the oldest in the country. It offers a variety of different types of membership, including a starter package for those who are just taking up the game, while juniors can take advantage of cadet or 18-21 memberships. Further afield, there is a pay-as-you-play nine-hole course on the Channels Estate in Little Waltham, while the Hylands Golf Complex in Margaretting, to the south of the city, offers either annual, seven-day, five-day and pay-as-you-go memberships.
