Removals to Odense, Denmark: Living in Odense

Odense is the third largest city in Denmark and has nearly 200,000 inhabitants living in the metropolitan area. The 1,000 year old city is full of old world charm and, although it is the oldest in Denmark, it is perhaps best known as the birthplace of world renowned author and poet, Hans Christian Andersen.

Odense certainly has magical appeal as there are many beautiful sites in and around the city, including picturesque streets with 15th and 16th century buildings. Many sites are attributed to the city's most famous resident, including sculptures and monuments dedicated to the author. Part of the house where he was supposedly born has been turned into a museum housing documents, drawings and furniture that once belonged to the fairytale writer.

As well as being characterised by interesting architecture and rich culture, Odense is also a very modern city with plenty to offer including a cafe culture, lively night life and great shopping facilities. If you like to splash out every now and again, most of the shopping is centred around the Vestergade but head 2.5 miles out of the city centre and you will find Rosengaardcentret, Denmark's largest shopping centre, which has more than 150 different shops.

Odense's second most visited attraction is Funen Village, an open air museum with 25 traditional Danish buildings, mainly dating from the 18th and 19th century. Time appears to stand still as staff dress up in period costume which brings the whole 'village' to life.

Denmark's 40-year-old railway museum draws nearly 100,000 visitors a year and is the largest museum of its type in Scandinavia. It has 50 engines and railway carriages on 20 tracks and a steam train runs in the school holidays.

As expected, another popular attraction is Hans Christian Anderson's childhood home, which attracts thousands of visitors a year and is a must see when you move to Odense. However, if castles are more your thing, 20 miles or so from the city centre is one of Europe's best preserved moated castles, Egeskov Castle, which also counts a maze, car museum, toy museum and a beautiful park among its attractions.

Other ways to get out and about in Odense are by bus, which are fairly regular, and the pricier alternative, by taxi. Odense also has a regional train service and, on a more leisurely day, you can even take a riverboat cruise!

For travel further afield, a train journey from Odense to Copenhagen takes about one and a half to two hours and it takes four to five hours to get to Hamburg in Germany. Odense airport offers a limited service with only some international flights, including direct flights to several Italian cities in the summer.
