The large village of Heybridge offers all the charm of riverside life, as well enjoying excellent links to Colchester, Chelmsford and London, making it one of the most attractive places in Essex to move to.
Chelmsford-based removals experts Greens supply competitively-priced commercial and domestic moving packages to Heybridge and all other parts of Essex, Suffolk, and East Anglia Here is our guide to the village and its history.
The Heritage of Heybridge
The name Heybridge came from the high bridge which was built over the River Blackwater. It was largely an agricultural village until the 1980s, both because of the cultivated arable land and because of the presence of E H Bentall and Co, who made farm machinery.
In 1984 the company – which by then had been taken over by the Acrow group – closed down and the site is now a shopping centre named after the original firm. Several housing developments have been built nearby.
Transport Links
Heybridge is just over five miles south-east of Hatfield Peverel and the A12, which links the village up with the north of the county. Chelmsford, which has a regular rail service to London, is around 12 miles east of Heybridge.
The village also has frequent bus services to neighbouring Maldon, as well as Chelmsford, Colchester, Wickham Bishops and Witham.
Heybridge Basin
The Basin lies on the end of the 13-mile Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation and contains the sea lock which joins the canal to the Blackwater estuary. Originally this was dug out to allow vessels to unload their cargoes onto barges bound for Chelmsford.
All commercial traffic through the Basin ended in 1972 and now it is home for pleasure craft. The spot is also the focal point for tourists, as Maldon, Goldhanger and the ancient village of Beeleigh are all within easy walking distance. The Basin also has two pubs and a tearoom for the less energetic.
Community Groups
The village has a thriving U3A (University of the Third Age) group, whose activities include croquet, family history and bird watching. The 1st Heybridge Scout Group caters for boys and girls between 6 and 18 in the Beaver, Cub and Scout Sections.
Most of the community events are held at Plantation Hall, on the King George V playing field, although the parish church, which dates mostly from the 15th century, is the venue for a number of meetings.
Heybridge Swifts Football Club play in the Aspen Waite arena in Scraley Road. The club, which was formed in 1880, runs a large number of youth teams as well as a senior side, who compete in the Bostik North League.
Schools
The village’s school, in Rowan Drive, has been ranked one of the top ten primaries in the whole county. Run by the Kemnal Academies Trust, it caters for more than 260 pupils, aged from 4 to 11.
Heybridge also has a Co-operative Academy which caters for children aged between 11 and 15 who have found it difficult adapting to life in a mainstream school. Class sizes are small, allowing pupils to learn more quickly.
Shops
The Bentalls Shopping Centre is the main retail centre, with a newsagents and post office, a supermarket, tanning and hair salons, takeaways, and a dry cleaners and laundrette.
