As seniority is respected in Malaysia and you should always greet an older person or a woman with a bow. Also give a small bow when you pass by someone, which also means excuse me and when you enter or leave a place.
When greeting someone, it is customary for men to greet the men first, then the women and for the women to greet the women first. It is also usual for ladies not to shake hands with male strangers.
Hugging and kissing someone in public is deemed unacceptable in Malaysia, especially in the rural areas.
People generally eat with their hands in Malaysia instead of with knives and forks. When eating, eat with your right hand and also pass things with your right hand as the left is considered dirty. Drinks and snacks are always served to guests and should not be refused. At least take a bite.
If you are invited to a person's home, remove your shoes before you enter. It is considered rude to cross your legs in-front of the host.
