Moving to Stockholm, Sweden: Living in Stockholm

Stockholm, Sweden's capital, is regarded as one of the beautiful cities in Europe. It is a vibrant capital with a mixture of old and new: ancient buildings sited alongside striking modern ones. Outside the city there are thousands of islands with fantastic, sandy beaches just waiting to be explored.

The city, on the east coast of Sweden, is regarded as the Venice of the north because of its open water, stunning buildings and expanse of parkland, which makes up 30 per cent of the city. It is referred to as the world's smallest big city and is made up of 14 islands connected by bridges.

Stockholm is one of the most visited city in the Nordic countries, attracting one million visitors a year. It is served by three main airports: Arlanda, Bromma and Skavsta.

Moving to Stockholm, Sweden: Places to Visit

Stockholm has a history that goes back to the 13th century and the old town (Gamla Stan) is full of narrow, medieval cobblestone streets and architectural delights. If you are fascinated by old buildings, one of the oldest surviving buildings is Riddarholm Church, a Franciscan monastery built in 1270. The Royal Palace, Drottningholm, is also well worth a visit and is one of two UNESCO world heritage sites.

Stockholm was awarded the European city of culture in 1998 and is full of museums, art galleries and fascinating architecture. In fact it has more than 100 museums to discover in and around the city including Nationalmuseum, home to Sweden's largest art collection which includes 16,000 paintings and 30,000 hand crafted objects.

If you enjoy art there is plenty to see in Stockholm, including the city's underground, which is regarded as the world's longest art gallery adorned with paintings, sculptures and mosaics.

Stockholm is also a shopper's paradise and the pedestrianised street Drottninggatan in Norrmalm is the place to go with many specialist shops as well as big name brands to tempt you.

Moving to Stockholm, Sweden: Climate

Sweden has a temperate climate which is mostly down to the Gulf Stream. Stockholm is fairly mild and enjoys an average of 2,000 hours of sunshine a year. You can expect to enjoy 18 hours of daylight in the summer months, although winters are long and dark. Summer temperatures vary between 12 - 25 °C, but it is not unusual for it to be hotter than this. Winters vary in temperatures between -3 - 3 °C and snow can be expected at any time between November to April.

Moving to Stockholm, Sweden: Accommodation for Expats

Although the standard of living is high in Sweden, accommodation for expats can be pricey. You can expect to pay around 5,500 Svenska Kronor (SEK) for an average three bedroom apartment and more for a flat in a better area.

You can either start your search for an apartment on the internet or use an agent. If you rent a first-hand rental apartment you need to provide either proof of guaranteed income or a Swedish personal identity number and this can prove tricky when you have first arrived. Another method - and this is far more common for expats - is renting a second-hand rental apartment. This does not require this extra paperwork and involves signing an agreement with the owner or the holder of the first hand rental contract.

Moving to Stockholm, Sweden: Out and About in Stockholm

To get out and about in Stockholm there is plenty of choice available. This includes the underground network, the commuter train, bus system, trams, rail, and ferry services. All of these use the same ticket system. To make travel easier there is a RFID card available, called SL Access, which costs 20 SEK.

Passes and coupons are both used on the travel system and strips of 16 coupons are available. At weekends, children under the age of 12 can travel free if accompanied by adults.
