Why Do People Emigrate to Australia?

Australia continues to be one of the most popular countries to move to, especially for people from the UK. It is so popular that more than 235,000 people are likely to move there this year alone, according to forecasts issued by the country’s own Treasury department.

Greens Removals, who offer high-quality, competitively-priced packages if you are considering moving to Australia, share five of the key reasons why the country continues to be such a popular destination – particularly for the British.

  1. The Weather

If you are based in the UK, then the sunshine is a big draw. Australia has one of the warmest climates in the world, with more than 3,000 hours of sunshine every year. That’s around twice as much as we receive here in the UK.

This also means a trip to the beach is unlikely to get rained off, with the added benefit that the average summer sea temperature is around 25oC. You’ll also get the delights of a summery Christmas, although remember the months from June to August will be comparatively cold.

  1. The Outdoor Lifestyle

The fact that rainfall is so low means there’s no excuse for not getting out and about and taking plenty of exercise. In Australia, 13 million adults and 3 million children regularly play sports.

Running and cycling are particularly popular in the cities. There’s also plenty of water sports to enjoy, along with rugby (union and league), tennis, netball, Aussie rules football and cricket.

Perhaps as a result, the average life expectancy in Australia is 83 years old (three years higher than the OECD average). And, even if you don’t play sports, you can always watch - the standard is usually very high, even at a local level.

  1. No Language Barrier

English is the official language, and almost three-quarters of the population speak only that at home. There is some local slang, and a few indigenous languages, but you will always be able to make yourself understood (and understand everyone else). So you won’t have to learn another language, and settling in should be comparatively easy.

In addition, Australians are widely known as having an extremely welcoming attitude (and a cosmopolitan culture, particularly in the inner cities), so whatever nationality you are, you shouldn’t have a problem assimilating.

  1. The Expat Community

There are already plenty of Britons in Australia. To be more precise, official figures show there are 1.2 million of us in the country (out of a total population of around 26 million).

If you are interested in removals to Sydney, Perth, Brisbane, Adelaide or Melbourne, it may be reassuring to know that all of the cities mentioned are popular with British expats and have thriving British social scenes as a result. So you should be able to integrate easily when you arrive.

  1. The State Support

The Australian equivalent of the NHS is known as Medicare. You can access it for free as a UK visitor, but if you take up permanent residence in the country you will have to pay a special tax levy, just like the locals.

Many Australians top this up with private insurance. However, the important factor is the quality of care, which is generally ranked as excellent. More than eight out of 10 Australians praised it in a recent study conducted by Ipsos.

The schools are good too, both primary and secondary education is free, and the country’s universities have a large number of overseas students.
